Recently @shascom911 dispatched a first alarm stru Recently @shascom911 dispatched a first alarm structure fire in District 5. Residents reported hearing an explosion in the garage, called 911 and began evacuating the structure. Engine 5 arrived first at scene reported approximately 50% of the structure involved by fire. He established command of the Galaxy Incident and ordered a medic unit for possible burn victim. Firefighter 5B placed an attack hoseline in service.

As additional engine companies began to arrive operational tasks such as search, vent, RIC (rapid intervention crew) were given.

The video above from Truck 1 Senior FF shows the truck crew laddering the structure and cutting a heat hole for interior crews. In the video you can hear interior crews coordinating vent with the Truck Captain. The firefighter performing the ventilation operation is a probationary FF on rotation to the Ladder Truck for some Truck Company operations experience.

The Galaxy Incident was terminated at approximately 0130 AM and crews refurbished gear and equipment and prepared for calls for service through the remainder of the shift. Engine 5 ran an additional 5 calls for service between 2am and 7am.

Views from the roof: Oasis Incident Recently @sh Views from the roof: Oasis Incident

Recently @shascom911 dispatched a first alarm structure fire in District 6; the first arriving officer, Engine 6 Captain, identified light smoke emitting from the structure, continued the response and prepared his apparatus as a pumping platform and his firefighter for fire attack. E8 arrived and was assigned interior fire attack with E6 FF. On entry interior crews noted poor visibility, high heat and a highly modified interior floor plan and arrangement. Truck 1 was assigned vertical ventilation operations. Truck 1 Captain & senior FF laddered the roof, sounded a path of travel and cut a vertical heat hole to provide interior crews relief from smoke and fire and drastically improve their visibility. The video above shows the FF point of view for the operation.

The probationary firefighter assigned to Engine6B had his first interior fire attack. Solid job!

The fire was contained to the structure of origin, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A recap of the latter part of the past week for Re A recap of the latter part of the past week for Redding Firefighters.

First Alarm structure fire on Placer Street; first due companies got quick knockdown on the fire. Quick knockdown of the fire assisted with expediting completion of the incident and reduced any traffic hazard created by the closing of Placer Street.

SRMC staff submitted photos of the vehicle fire, suppression and investigation that occurred in the parking lot. One vehicle sustained significant damage in addition to the vehicle of origin.

Redding Firefighters currently have 3 engines deployed to assist with the Happy Camp Complex with a total of 11 personnel deployed.

Earlier this week both on duty and off duty Redding Firefighters assisted with the procession to receive the remains of the recently deceased Cal Fire contract pilot, Tony Sousa. Providing a static display of personnel, equipment and color guard display.

The City remains fully staffed and Redding Firefighters continue to answer the call to cover stations, backfill behind deployed personnel, and cover existing vacancies.

Grove Incident, 8/2/23 After a full day of hands Grove Incident, 8/2/23

After a full day of hands on training with the soon to be in service new Truck 1, @shascom911 dispatched a first alarm structure fire with multiple reports of a confirmed structure fire in District 5. Initial reports placed the incident on Grove Street. Engine 5 arrived at scene, the Captain confirmed a working fire with immediate threat to nearby exposures, continued all responding equipment to the incident and initiated fire attack to try and protect the exposures.

Access to the incident from the original reported location was limited, forcing crews to redirect to Cypress and Bechelli. Battalion 1 arrived at scene, assumed command of the incident, advised Shascom to strike a second alarm, committing all city resources to the incident. E5 Captain assumed the role of fire attack. Crews immediately went to work on the Bravo 1 exposure to prevent further extension of the main fire. Driven by wind the Bravo 1 exposure was quickly affected by fire, while additional fire attack crews had poor access to the structure of origin, cutting several fences to create access and laddering the structure to make access as a result of burned away stairway access. At the peak of the firefight E5 Engineer was flowing in excess of 1,300 gallons of water per minute through various hoses and water appliances and had 750 feet of attack line in service.

During the course of the Grove Incident off duty Redding Firefighters returned to their duty stations, staffed reserve equipment and provided service throughout the City. Additional resources from @calfireshu, @shastalakefire, and Shasta County Fire provided coverage for the city.

Thank you to our partners @reddingpolice, @reddingelectric, @shascom911 and @calfireshu for successful conclusion of this incident.

RDN Engine 5 Crew On Sunday evening @ approximate RDN Engine 5 Crew

On Sunday evening @ approximately 11pm Shascom initiated a first alarm structure fire response to District 5. Per Shascom the initial reporting party (RP) was a mobility limited individual claiming he was trapped by the fire in his residence. E5 had a total distance traveled of .3 miles (less than 1 min drive time from Station 5). Engine 5 arrived quickly at scene to visible exterior fire with extension into the first and second floors of the apartment. Upon arrival Captain 5A announced the crew would be in rescue mode; he forced the door to the residence and initiated a search while 5 Engineer and Firefighter placed an attack line in service. 5 Firefighter darkened the main body of fire, took the attack line interior where he located and removed the entrapped victim. Both the Captain and Engineer quickly initiated patient care for the individual, who was ultimately transported to a local area hospital with significant burns to his body. 5 Firefighter was assigned to Fire Attack, led by Captain 3B.

The Hartnell incident ultimately went 2nd alarm because of the number of exposures and level of fire involvement in multiple, common attic spaces. Multiple residents were displaced as a result of the incident.

Please join the Redding Fire Family in remembering Please join the Redding Fire Family in remembering fallen Brother Jeremy Stoke.

July 26, 2018:

“Shascom E5 responding, be advised all City resources are committed. The City is vacant…” the radio traffic from Engine 5 Captain to Shascom as E5 was dispatched to assist with firefighting efforts in the area of Sunset Terrace. The next 18 hours would be the longest night for many of our lives, a career firefight, the first recorded fire tornado in the history of U.S. firefighting, the tragic loss of large parts of the community, ultimately ending in the loss of our Brother Jeremy.

Many know Jeremy’s story, about how he returned to duty early from a family vacation and without hesitation assisted with the evacuation of numerous citizens in harms way. What many people don’t know is the man we knew who could lighten the mood anywhere. The Brother with a dry wit that you couldn’t help but chuckle when he threw some of his classic one liners, the fireman who despite full sleeve tattoos and a gruff voice was kind and gentle to all he encountered, the guy who loved his engine, his district and pushed E8 to the limit to get his crew safely at scene. We know that Brother. We know the man that loved his wife and his kids more than anything could ever describe, accepted you for who you are and embodied the sense of firemanship and brotherhood we should all strive for.

Rest easy Brother, we’ll take it from here.

Please visit the Jeremy Stoke Legacy Fire Foundation, https://www.stokelegacy.org, for information on how to honor and remember Jeremy.

Footage from yesterday’s “School Incident” Footage from yesterday’s “School Incident”

Yesterday while clearing a call Engine 5 visualized a small column of smoke south of their location, Captain 5A contacted @shascom911 to confirm reports of a fire. Shascom advised a single report of a vehicle fire. The crew pulled over, turned out, and in that time the smoke column had grown substantially prompting Captain 5A to advise Shascom to dispatch a first alarm structure fire response. On arrival the first in officer reported multiple structures well involved with fire initiated fire attack with his crew and began coordinating tactical assignments with incoming resources. With the level of fire involvement, poor access, and number of structures involved in his size up the officer immediately advised Shascom to upgrade the response to a 2nd alarm, committing all RFD resources to the incident.

At this time Battalion 1 arrived at scene, assumed command of the incident and began to coordinate resources to address the various structures, exposures, vegetation fire, and compromised electric utility poles affecting the incident.

Ultimately the “School Incident” went to a 3rd alarm, with assistance from @calfireshu at scene assisting the firefight and Shasta County/CalFire resources providing station coverage for the duration of the incident. Ambient temperatures at the time were recorded at 106 degrees.

Thank you to our partners with @reddingpolice, @reddingelectric , @calfireshu , Shasta County Fire, @shascom911 for the successful conclusion of this incident.

5 years ago Redding Firefighters woke to the news 5 years ago Redding Firefighters woke to the news that Fire Chief Gerry Gray had passed away at home. Gerry will be remembered as a strong advocate for the needs of the Redding Community as he tirelessly advocated for increases in funding, staffing, equipment and everything in between for the Redding Fire Department. He worked diligently with various cooperators and organizations to enhance the service delivery to our community, while also maintaining a personal touch for each of his firefighters, often reaching out to congratulate members on their personal and professional achievements and thanking each person he saw for their contribution to our Department. He was known for his diligent observation of the weather, his enthusiasm for all things HazMat, and his dedication to going above and beyond the call of duty.

The Redding Fire Department has changed a lot in the last 5 years, but what remains constant throughout this time are the members that are ready, focused and dedicated to serving our community. Just as Gerry would have it.
